35 Things I’ve Learned From Having Kids

Being a mother is challenging and exhausting but also rewarding and wonderful, all at the same time. The following is a list of some things I have learned since becoming a mother of two:

1.       It is possible for me to get ready in ten min or less.

2.       I can probably win a multi-tasking competition, if there was one.

3.       I can do just about anything, with one hand.

4.       There are definitely not enough hours in a day.

5.       Uninterrupted showers are a rare gift from my children.

6.       Meals don’t necessarily need to be warm to be edible.

7.       It is very possible to forget to eat a meal.

8.       It is easier to stand up and eat than sit down and have to get up 10 times because…

9.       My kids will almost always need something a second after I sit down.

10.   Stress that I felt before exams is nothing in comparison to the amount of stress I feel every morning trying to get everyone ready and out the door on time.

11.   I can function with just 3 hours of sleep, but  I probably shouldn’t.

12.   There is no such thing as a sick day.

13.   The calendar is one of the best things I bought for myself.

14.   I have to pack a bag of essentials and more no matter where I go, but…

15.   No matter how prepared I think I am, I will end up needing something I didn’t pack.

16.   Doing laundry is a forever kind of chore. By the time I wash, fold, and put away one load, another one will be ready for washing.

17.   There is no limit to the amount of diapers changes or potty breaks required per day.

18.   When I think that I will get to bed early, something unexpected will almost always come up.

19.   When a child is sick, he or she will be the most sick between the hours of 1am-4am.

20.   The most valuable gifts are those that are hand-made by my children, just for me.

21.   My home will never lack in artwork.

22.   My home will never lack in spills, mess, and dirty dishes either.

23.   There is strength in me that I never knew I had before.

24.   I have a newfound sense of appreciation and understanding for my parents.

25.   I am so much more like my mom than I had previously thought.

26.   I am able to do things that I never thought I would be able to do.

27.   I don’t care too much about what people think of me or say about me.

28.   Family, relatives, friends, and even strangers (with or without) kids will have an opinion or advice on how I should raise my kids.

29.   Children have the biggest hearts.

30.   I learn so much more from my children, than they probably learn from me.

31.   Quiet time, cuddle-time, story-time, and bedtime are the best!

32.   Cleaning and organizing can be very therapeutic.

33.   I will always be in awe of how fast my children are growing and learning.

34.   I will never get tired of looking at pictures of my children, regardless of how many times I look at them.

35.   No matter how difficult my day is, no matter how sick I am, no matter how many tantrums my kids had that day, I still smile.

  1. Dear Modern Day Brown Mom,

I am a single woman with no children. Are you suggesting not to have children and thereof avoid the strains of cooking and cleaning (that I’m already refusing to do for my mom)?

    Sincerely,

    1. Dear Abi (SingleBrownGirlNearlyPastTheMarriageableAge),

Becoming a mother has made me a better person in so many ways. I didn’t know how to cook all that well before I got married because my mother never let me near a stove. Now I love cooking. When you have kids and deal with all sorts of chaos, cleaning is one of the things you may actually look forward to doing.

My suggestion would be for you to get married and have some babies (when you are ready, of course)

      Love,

      Modern Day Brown Mom
