Our Trip to the Canadian Automotive Museum

Our Trip to the Canadian Automotive Museum

A couple weeks ago, we took a trip to the Canadian Automotive Museum located in downtown Oshawa. All three of my kids are car-obsessed, especially Udayan so I knew this would be an exciting adventure for all. As predicted we had a wonderful visit, took tons of pictures of all the interesting cars on display, and learned a bit of about the history of the museum.

Established in 1962, The Canadian Automotive Museum begun as a community project of the Oshawa Chamber of Commerce to promote the history of the automotive industry and to promote tourism in the area. A former car dealership on Simcoe Street was converted into a facility where antique automobiles and related artifacts could be put on display. The Canadian Automotive Museum opened its doors to the public in 1963. Today the Canadian Automotive Museum holds the majority of European vehicles on the main floor, while the second floor showcases the history of automotive manufacturing in Canada.

Here are some things you might want to know if you are planning to head down to the museum:

  • The museum is open Monday to Friday from 10:00AM to 4:30PM and on Saturdays from 10:00AM to 4:00PM. The museum is also open on Sundays from 10:00AM to 4:00PM during the months of May through October.
  • Guided tours are available on Saturdays at 1:00PM, and is included with admission.
  • Admission is $12CND for adults and $6 for youth ages 6-17. Kids five and under are free.
  • Free parking is available in the lot behind the museum or the lot adjacent to the museum.
  • The first floor holds European cars and the second floor displays cars made in Canada from 1903-1999.
  • A full scale model of Lightning McQueen from Disney Pixar’s Cars is on display until November 30, 2019.
  • Kids can partake in a small scavenger hunt or colouring.
  • Bathrooms are available within.
  • Unfortunately, the second floor is not wheel-chair or stroller accessible.
