As part of our homeschooling journey, we started nature study this week. This gives us the motivation to get outdoors for fresh air, sun, and exercise while stimulating curiosity, cultivating observation skills, and connecting with nature all at the same time. On yesterday’s nature walk, we saw a wild turkey, a rabbit, beetle, ants, a spider, mushrooms, moss, leaves in the process of changing colour, and acorns which sparked a lot of conversation, alot of which was science related. We took along a magnifying glass, binoculars, an outdoor thermometer, journals and pencil crayons and the kids jotted down/sketched their observations in their nature journal.

After our nature walk, we started a fire and made S’mores. We used Dandies vegan marshmallows and Endangered Species fair-trade chocolate. We discovered vegan marshmallows definitely do not melt the same way as regular marshmallows do over a fire, however they were still pretty awesome. They are definitely better in hot chocolate. Today the kids are working on procedural writing in language and they’ll be writing out a recipe for S’mores.
